What Is a Lamport on Solana? | Synap Flow Core Guides

Solana's smallest unit of account, named after Leslie Lamport, and why wallets still show SOL instead of lamports for everyday amounts.

Stack of coins on a neutral background

One SOL equals one billion lamports (1 SOL = 1,000,000,000 lamports). Wallets display SOL because whole-number lamports for typical balances would overwhelm the screen โ€” similar to showing pounds rather than pence for a grocery total.

Why the name

Leslie Lamport contributed foundational work on distributed systems and logical clocks. Solana's creators adopted his name for the base unit as a nod to consensus research. Knowing the etymology is optional; knowing the conversion factor is not.

Where lamports appear

Explorer and RPC responses often quote fees and rent-exempt minimum balances in lamports. If you see 5000 attached to a fee field, divide by one billion to express it in SOL โ€” a tiny fraction.

Rent-exempt account thresholds also use lamports. When a session participant asks why an account needs a minimum balance, the answer lives in lamports converted to SOL for intuition.

Mental model for learners

Treat lamports like pence and SOL like pounds. You spend and think in SOL; the protocol accounts in lamports. Devnet faucets dispense SOL amounts; behind the scenes the credit still lands as lamport integers.

Quick reference

SOL Lamports
0.001 1,000,000
0.01 10,000,000
1 1,000,000,000
