What validators do on Solana, why RPC nodes sit in front of them, and how that affects the transaction you send from your wallet.
When you click "send" in a Solana wallet, your transaction does not jump straight onto the blockchain. It passes through several stations first. Understanding those stations makes explorer output readable instead of mysterious.
Validators: the record keepers
Validators run specialised software that holds a copy of Solana's ledger and votes on which transactions belong in the next block. They stake SOL — their own or delegated from others — as collateral for honest behaviour. If you have no stake in the network yourself, you still rely on validators every time you transact.
Think of validators as independent clerks who compare notes. They do not personally approve your payment; they agree on ordering and validity according to protocol rules.
RPC nodes: your front desk
Your wallet speaks to an RPC (Remote Procedure Call) node, not directly to every validator. The RPC accepts your signed transaction, forwards it toward the network, and returns status updates your wallet displays.
Different wallets default to different RPC providers. Speed and reliability vary. During learning sessions we use public devnet RPC endpoints and discuss why mainnet users sometimes pay for dedicated access.
Why this matters before your first transfer
When a transaction " hangs," the fault may sit with RPC propagation, blockhash expiry, or insufficient fees — not necessarily with your wallet app. Knowing the chain of custody helps you ask sharper questions and read Solana Explorer fields like slot, confirmation status, and fee in context.
Practical takeaway
